U.S. businesses experience significant profit and market loss due to the theft of trade secrets. Foreign companies seek to steal U.S. trade secrets–particularly theft of sensitive information pertaining to research and development, production processes, and corporate strategies–to erode U.S. companies’ overseas market competitiveness and technological leadership. By so doing, they also try to outmaneuver or underbid U.S. companies, hoping to tilt the playing field in their favor. This multi-dimensional threat is not confined to particular industries or countries and will increase for the foreseeable future.
